Is Mental Health Linked to Your Ability to Relax Your Pelvic Floor?

We’ve been talking a lot about hyper active pelvic floors this month – As a refresher, a lot of women assume the muscles in their pelvic floor are weak and need to be strengthened, however, the majority of women actually have hypertonia, which means their pelvic floors are too tight.

There are many factors that can lead to hypertonic pelvic floor muscles:

  • Stress

  • Sexual trauma

  • Holding in gas

And a hypertonic pelvic floor can cause many issues:

  • Constipation

  • Incomplete emptying of the bowels or straining

  • Pelvic, low back, coccyx or hip pain

  • Painful sex

But why do many women have trouble relaxing their pelvic floor? Turns out it could be tied to our mental health.
